How To Erect A Scaffold Tower

Erecting a scaffold tower safely requires following the manufacturer's instructions for the specific tower model. Most modern aluminium towers use either the 3T (Through the Trapdoor) or AGR (Advanced Guard Rail) method, both of which are designed to minimise the risk of falls during assembly.

Here's a general guide:

1. Prepare the Work Area

Before assembly:

  • Inspect all tower components for damage
  • Ensure the ground is firm, level, and capable of supporting the tower
  • Remove obstacles from the work area
  • Check for overhead hazards such as power lines
  • Wear appropriate PPE, including a hard hat, safety footwear, and gloves.

2. Assemble the Base

  • Position the base frames according to the manufacturer's instructions
  • Fit the horizontal and diagonal braces to create a rigid base
  • Install locking castors (wheels) if the tower is mobile
  • Lock all wheels before continuing
  • Use adjustable legs if required to level the tower


3. Install the First Platform

  • Fit the working platform at the recommended height
  • Ensure the platform is securely locked into place
  • Check that all brace clips are fully engaged


4. Build the Tower Safely

Continue adding frames one level at a time. If using the 3T method:

  • Climb through the trapdoor in the platform
  • Install guardrails from the protected position before standing on the next level
  • Never climb onto an unprotected platform.

If using the AGR method:

  • Install the advanced guardrail from below before ascending
  • Maintain edge protection throughout the build.

5. Add Bracing
Install all horizontal and diagonal braces exactly as specified.

Never omit braces, even on lower levels.

6. Install Outriggers or Stabilisers

Where required by the manufacturer's instructions:

  • Fit outriggers securely
  • Position them correctly
  • Ensure they rest firmly on the ground.

These are essential for taller towers and help prevent overturning.

7. Fit the Top Platform

Install:

  • The working platform
  • Guardrails
  • Mid-rails
  • Toe boards
  • Confirm all components are locked securely before use

8. Carry Out a Final Inspection

Before anyone climbs the tower, check:

  • All braces are fitted
  • Platforms are locked
  • Guardrails are complete
  • Wheels are locked.
  • Outriggers are installed correctly (if required)
  • The tower is vertical and stable.

Important Safety Rules

Always:

  • Follow the manufacturer's assembly guide
  • Build the tower on level ground
  • Lock castors before use
  • Climb using the internal access ladder
  • Keep both feet on the platform while working
  • Move the tower only when it is unoccupied.

Never:

  • Stand on guardrails or toe boards
  • Use boxes or ladders on the platform to gain extra height
  • Exceed the tower's maximum load capacity
  • Erect or use the tower in high winds beyond the manufacturer's recommended limits
  • Modify the tower with non-approved components.

Training

Anyone erecting or dismantling a scaffold tower should be competent to do so. In the UK, many employers provide training aligned with industry guidance such as the PASMA (Prefabricated Access Suppliers' and Manufacturers' Association) standard for mobile access towers.
